The J.C. Newman Yagua is one of the most distinctive cigars produced by the historic J.C. Newman Cigar Company. Handcrafted at the company's PENSA factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, Yagua recreates an old Cuban farm tradition in which freshly rolled cigars were bundled together while still wet and tightly wrapped in the leaf of the Yagua palm.
The result is intentionally rustic: no two Yagua cigars have exactly the same shape. Beneath its dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper is an all-Nicaraguan binder and filler blend, producing a medium-bodied profile with rich notes of coffee, chocolate, earth, cedar, sweetness and red pepper.
Yagua delivers an old-school Broadleaf profile built around coffee, chocolate and earth. Red pepper adds spice while cedar and natural tobacco provide a woody foundation. As the cigar progresses, the darker coffee and cocoa characteristics are balanced by underlying sweetness.
The combination of Connecticut Broadleaf and Nicaraguan tobaccos gives Yagua considerably more depth than its rustic appearance might suggest, while remaining around medium in both strength and body.
Each Yagua presentation contains 20 cigars. Rather than arranging them conventionally inside a cigar box, the cigars remain bundled together inside the Yagua palm leaf used during production, and the complete bundle is placed inside a rustic crate-style box.
This unusual presentation makes Yagua instantly recognizable on a retail shelf and reinforces the Cuban farm-cigar tradition behind the project.
The J.C. Newman Yagua 6 x 54 received a very respectable 89-point rating from Cigar Coop.
89 Points – Cigar Coop
Cigar Coop highlighted flavors of coffee, chocolate, earth, red pepper and cedar, rating both the burn and draw as very good. The review characterized Yagua as a medium-strength, medium-bodied cigar with an old-school Connecticut Broadleaf character and recommended it to cigar enthusiasts.
Cigar Aficionado has also covered Yagua's limited releases and its unconventional manufacturing process, confirming the 6 x 54 size, Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Nicaraguan interior tobaccos, 20-cigar packaging and one-year post-roll aging.
Yagua continues to be produced as a limited periodic release. Cigar Snob reported the first 2026 shipment in April 2026, confirming that J.C. Newman continues to produce the cigar using the same unconventional palm-binding process, under-fermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and approximately 6 x 54 format.
Founded in 1895, J.C. Newman Cigar Company is America's oldest family-owned premium cigar manufacturer. Yagua is handcrafted at the company's PENSA factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, using a production method inspired by the traditional farm cigars remembered by factory general manager Lazaro Lopez from his family's tobacco farm in Cuba.
